Although today Al Capone is considered one of the world's most violent yet successful criminals,  in his time, he was considered the "real world Robin Hood."  He was known for his generosity.  An unknown Chicago resident once said,"You can say what you want about Al Capone. If people were desperate and needed help, he was there to help them. As long as you were on the up-and-up. He didn't expect anything in return and he never expected you to pay him back."  Among other acts of kindness, Al Capone oftentimes had his fellow gang members hand out blankets and food to the homeless during cold Chicago winters, helped out women who were so poor they were considering prostitution, and opened many homeless shelters and soup kitchens.  The generosity mixed with the violent nature was just one of the reasons why Al Capone was viewed as such an unusual criminal.
